Become a Master Gardner  Is there anyone who has contemplated becoming a Master Gardener?  It is a great volunteer program, not at all scary. You do NOT have to know everything about the horticultural world or even all the Latin (botanical) names.

What you DO do is go to a series of 10 all-day classes (one a week) beginning January 23,  on things horticultural and then agree to volunteer in one or more of the Master Gardener projects.  If you have any questions, Jane Ellison, Anne Ginn, and Suzy Hartford are all Master Gardeners and could answer questions.  (Also, Carolyn Batchellor and Nancy Stevenson from that other Garden Club).

There is an information meeting on Wednesday, October 23 at the Mayfeld Library on Wilson Mills at 7. It should last about an hour and will have application forms. Or call Betty Killeen, Master Gardener Coordinator.

"Let's Plan Ahead" - Fall Garden Seminar  On Saturday, November 9, OSU and the Master Gardeners will put on their annual Fall Garden Seminar entitled "Let's Plan Ahead". It will run from 9:30 until 3:30 and cost $35.00 which includes materials and lunch - such a bargain. Location is the Westlake Public Library - right off I 90 at Crocker Road, probably only 40 minutes from Fairmount and Warrensville. Topics covered will be:

  • Using Herbs in the Landscape - Mark Langan of Mulberry Creek Farm, Huron

  • Using Sweeps of Plants in the Landscape - Leslie Scott, landscape designer

  • Your Landscape: a sense of place; a sense of purpose - Jack Kerrigan

  • Preparing your soil for Spring - Barbara McGinty, recycling coordinator for Lakewood & Master Gardener

Last year's drew over 160 and was excellent ! Jack Kerrigan alone is worth the trip.
