Best Fall Bloomers to Keep the Bees Coming!

Cynthia Druckenbrod

The riot of summer perennials has passed so which plants will continue to attract pollinators when autumn arrives? Here are some worth planting that will extend the flowering season.

  • Helenium autumnale (Sneezeweed) - Found throughout the US, this native perennial stands tall in the garden at over 4’. There are several cultivars available with most having yellow, red or orange coloration. Best grown in full sun. Sneezeweed is much loved by honeybees and native bees!

  • Symphyotrichum oblongifolium ‘October skies’ (Aster) - This low growing perennial (about 18”) is great for mass planting. Many asters are not too particular about soil, doing well in either clay or sandy conditions. A beautiful, heavily floriferous plant, best cut back after flowering to prevent spreading.

  • Cimicifuga racemosa - Also known as Black cohosh or Bugbane, the ferny leaves can be green or deep purple based on cultivar. Long, fragrant, white panicles of flowers are held high on the plant. All types prefer moist, well drained soils in partial shade.

  • Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’ (Rough goldenrod) - Prefers moist soils in full sun. This is a great perennial for naturalizing or for use in meadows. The little yellow flowers are borne on panicles that can reach up to four feet- a real standout in the perennial border!
