A Fantasy, Realized

Robin Schachat

The past ten years have seen four Flower Shows produced by Shaker Lakes Garden Club, beginning with our Perennial Centennial in our club’s centennial year, followed by The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring, Tra La; Cornucopia; and now A Fantasy. During a period troubled by illness, worries, and meetings held on Zoom, the nature of our club has adapted magnificently to challenge, and it is nice finally to be back on track for full-scale operations. We are lucky women indeed.

This most recent show was a happy success, a three day weekend event (September 8-10) held at the Shaker Heights Main Library and attended by almost 500 members of the public in addition to our own members. The education exhibits remain on display at the Library until November, and continue to attract attention.

The classic exhibits that everyone loves best – the Floral Designs, Photographs, Horticulture entries, and Botanical Jewelry – have all passed into our history. But records of them remain, and Dozie Herbruck has kindly provided access to them for anyone who would like to revisit their glories. And they were glorious! The Judges who came from all over the country were uniform in their respect for and praise of the terrific displays set forth by our SLGC members. Our ladies are truly wonderful artists and gardeners.

Please take the opportunity to look through the blue ribbon and special award winners Dozie has made available on our SLGC website. A final report of show facts and figures will follow in the future. But for now, bask in the beauty of flowers!
