An Invitation to an Instructive Tour of the GCA Annual Meeting Flower Show

Martha Marsh and Robin Schachat

Dear Members of the SLGC,

By the time our 2023 flower show, A Fantasy, will take place in September of this year, it will have been five years since our club was able to host a show, many thanks to Covid. During those years, we have happily welcomed quite a few new members to our ranks. That means there are a lot of Shaker Lakes ladies who have never experienced a GCA flower show!

In the past (like 10 years ago?) a few of us on the committee have led SLGC groups through other clubs’ shows, answering questions and pointing out examples of the reasons certain exhibits, whether in floral design or horticulture or photography or botanical arts might have been more favorably judged than others.

Would you like your Flower Show Committee to set up such a group visit to the flower show at the GCA Annual Meeting in Columbus this May? This would not be specifically for new members, but for any interested SLGC ladies. We know a number of you will be volunteering at the Meeting and also entering the show, and our provisional classes have a plan to visit the Annual Meeting to learn more about GCA in general. We would be happy to have the committee lead a Q&A tour of the show, if enough ladies are interested. This is the only GCA show taking place closer to Cleveland than Evanston or Paduca before our own show takes place, so it is the optimal opportunity to see a GCA flower show in operation.

Here is a link to the Schedule for the show: 2023 SCHEDULE 8.19.22 GCA AM FS.pdf (gcamerica.org) 2023 SCHEDULE 8.19.22 GCA AM FS.pdf (gcamerica.org)

If you believe you would like to spend a day (drive back and forth to Columbus, flower show tour, and lunch) on Tuesday, May 23, please respond to Robin at robinslgc@gmail.com with your name and preferred contact information before March 31st, so we can make plans. There will be no bus, so some members of the group will need to drive. If you are willing to drive, please include that in your response.

And who knows, if the Club finds sessions like this useful, perhaps we’ll go to the GC of Michigan’s show later in the fall as well!

Happy February!
