Peat Moss in Your Garden - Good or Bad?

Click here to listen to a podcast about this controversial topic. The NYT recently published an article about this topic as well.

How Well Do We Know Our Bioregion?

From Robin Schachat: I was reading an ecologically-oriented e-newsletter today, and ran across the attached quiz.  I did not fare too well with the answers!  I’ll bet most of us can do better.  But this does raise some questions that we probably ought to be able to answer – except please see my note on question #3, which I think is beyond our needs.  Still, we could learn….

Anyway, here is a quickie quiz to amuse and ground us all, while we are waiting for planting season to arrive!  Enjoy –

Only Knitters Will Appreciate…

From Betsy Stueber: Did you know the Chinese Olympic Committee is giving out 1251 knitted wool floral bouquets to winners at the Olympics? Click here to read about the originator of the design and the work involved to produce them.

Make a Bee Hotel in Your Yard

From Suzy Hartford: Here is a project that looks fun AND would be helpful to encourage the bees in your yard. It's one little kids (and bigger) can do and give to their grandparents or other relatives. I am going to use the stems I cut back next year, putting them to better use than just trashing them. How easy and sensible is THAT?! Click here to read about it.

Are you looking for some gardening-related things to do during these snowy days? Start by watching Doug Tallamy's excellent talk, The Little Things That Run the World. He is engaging and speaks about pollinators and plants you want to have - many of you DO have - and why they are important. There's even a bit about how to incorporate them without having your garden look a mess. I liked seeing that some things I'd done unconsciously were the right thing but I'd done them only for the aesthetics; it's an encouragement to be more thoughtful. Click here for the link; it lasts about an hour.

What’s New on the Horticulture Landing page of the GCA Website?

From Cynthia Druckenbrod: All About Begonias is an amazing resource that’s been added to the Horticulture 101 section. Anyone interested in beginning to grow these beautiful and interesting plants should definitely consult this pdf file.

My husband and I grow tuberous and Rex Begonias and they are a real delight! Yes, I’m being silly here.

Reminder!

Don’t forget to designate Shaker Lakes Garden Club as a recipient of donations from Amazon Smile for every purchase you make. It only takes a moment to do so. Call Treasurer Suzy Hartford at 216/835-0363 if you want/need help doing so.
