President's Letter April 2020

Dear Friends,

I hope you are all safe and healthy. With all the uncertainty, I find communicating via telephone and computer with you a comforting pleasure. It is important that we maintain our ties and friendships while keeping a safe physical distance. The GCA, and our President Debbie Edwards, have offered several solutions for keeping in touch. They are included with this newsletter. Try some of them out. A group afternoon tea via Google Hangouts, or a morning coffee klatsch via Zoom might be a fun diversion. I have experimented with a few of them. You will find yourself feeling like a pioneer blazing a new path with electronic devices while at the same time patting yourself on the back for a technological success.

Please know that if there are any changes to membership meetings, we will contact you immediately. Our April meeting has been cancelled due to the Govenor's shelter in place order.  Our April “Fun Raiser” has also been postponed. I hope we can reschedule this with Garden Club of Cleveland in the near future. Perhaps, we may be able to have a phone-in order day. After discussions with J. McLaughlin, we will send out an update. Our May Meeting and June Annual Meeting are hopefully a “go”. Again, if anything changes, we will inform you immediately. Your health and safety are paramount.

I have found that hiking and walking are wonderful anxiety relievers. The early spring weather draws one outdoors to soak up the warmth of the sun and to enjoy the songs of returning birds. I heartily recommend a visit to a park or woods, keeping in mind a social distance of six feet, or even a stroll in your own backyard. Perhaps a little spring cleaning in the garden or starting a few seeds on a sunny windowsill would be restorative.

In February, we enjoyed a wonderful program with Lee Paulson on dahlias. Start a few tubers in pots to guarantee beautiful blooms by late summer. I do hope you will find a moment to take some solace in Nature’s serenity and its spring awakening. I also hope you stay healthy and safe.
