May is a vibrant time in the garden, buzzing with life and bursting with growth! Shortly after Mother’s Day is an excellent time to plant a wide variety of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. I’ll be planting dahlia tubers at the end of the month. Why not consider a few new native plants to add to your containers or gardens? Some of my favorite native perennials include Mountain Mint, Pycnathemum sp., Bee Balm, Monarda sp., and Beardtongue, Penstemon sp.

Take time to observe the wildlife in your garden, from pollinators like bees and butterflies to birds and other beneficial insects. Create habitats and provide food and water sources to support biodiversity in your garden. The ruby-throated hummingbirds and orioles are back! I cleaned out my mason bee home and the bees are already busily laying eggs and gathering provisions for their larvae.

Our club has so many opportunities to offer in May! Beginning May 3, we’ll tour Rid-All and we’ll present them with the GCA’s Common Ground Collaborative Award. As you’ll recall, the GCA’s Civic Improvement and Grants Committee awarded a $10,000 grant to help SLGC build a long term relationship with Rid-All Green Partnership in its endeavor to re-forest areas of Cleveland. Thank you to Ruth Eppig, Chair of our Civic Improvement Committee, whose successful application made this grant possible. Mark your calendars for May 23 at 10 am for the first of four volunteer opportunities at Rid-All.

Lastly, please join us for our members meeting and lunch on May 28 at 10:30 am at Spice Farm located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

May offers an abundance of opportunities to nurture and enjoy your garden as it comes to life with the sights, sounds, and scents of spring. Happy gardening and I hope to see you soon at one of our many events!
