Climate Change Solutions with Big Impact at the Household Level!

Judith McMillan

For those of you who missed the May 25 program presentation by Daniel Brown of Rust Belt Riders, here are some takeaways:

By far the largest factor contributing to climate change comes from food waste— bigger than any other sector and that means bigger than transportation, electricity generation, beef and production— and in the US 43% of food waste comes from households.

Rust Belt Riders is a local company working to keep food waste out of landfills by collecting grocery store, restaurant, and home food waste and composting it. Last year they kept 2.4 million tons of food waste out of landfills, where it would have contributed to global warming. Through their second company Tilth, they scientifically create special soil mixes for specific purposes from seed germination, house plant growing, garden beds, and even medicinal growing (cannabis).  Their product is packaged so that the good microbes are not killed by being smothered by plastic bagging.  Germination rates are higher and growth rates superior.
