Invasive Nonnative Landscape Plants that
Martha Stewart Says You Must NEVER Grow

This is a primer for those who have not yet delved into the pleasures you can find at the resource section of Nature in my Backyard. Martha Stewart agrees with us! Of course, she is barely scratching the surface with this list of 10 monsters, but please start here!

Beginning in the new year, the NMB ladies will be sending a 2-page article each month in the Newsletter, highlighting a plant you must NEVER grow, along with one or two or three wonderful native alternatives. But for now, you can learn from Martha’s writers. Please see their article here: 110 Invasive Plants Experts Say to Never Grow in Your Garden.

A Treat at the Cleveland Natural History Museum

Judith McMillan’s bird nest photographs are on display now at our Natural History Museum. The theme of the display is birds as architects and the mentality of the collector.  The photographs were in the research collection of the CMNH and the Field Museum in Chicago. Go see them!

A Beautiful Sight in Japan!

Laurel Stack, our inter-continental member, has sent photos of an exhibit she attended in Japan recently. From Laurel, “I’m commuting to Tokyo and on my current visit I saw the most lovely Chrysanthemum exhibit at one of the large parks in the city.” Thanks for sharing, Laurel!

Reminder to Hostess a SLGC Membership Meeting

Please click here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D49A9AA23A6F49-hostess1 to sign up to hostess a membership meeting.  As mentioned in our Standing Rules, serving as a hostess is an obligation of Active membership.  Hostess responsibilities are very simple and include providing coffee/tea, water and a light snack.  Please note that the annual meeting responsibilities are different and will require help with providing flowers and set-up.  The Provisional Members will greet guests and provide name tags.  There is no need for Provisional Members to sign-up to hostess a meeting.

Climate Change

by Suzy Hartford

You may have noticed that typically less hardy plants are succeeding in your garden. (I am still growing the chrysanthemums from our 2019 flower show.) Some may be in protected spots but now there is official confirmation that we are truly warming and can be a bit bolder in our plant purchases. It is still a good idea to mulch around newly planted friends but...

Hot off the presses, here is the latest USDA update on plant hardiness zones in Ohio.
